Digestion is fundamental to nutritional therapy

Many people suffer in silence with digestive issues thinking that what they are feeling is just a part of normal life. Over time, we can become disconnected with our body – and the consequences that occur due to digestive dysfunction.

What are some of these consequences?

Well for starters….heartburn, indigestion, bloating, constipation, gas.

Just as digestion is a north to south process, digestive dysfunction is also a north to south process. When working with clients, we start to address these issues from the northern most point.

Our stomach needs to be producing enough Hydrochloric Acid, to lower the pH of the stomach so that chemical breakdown can begin.

We need bile in sufficient quantities to break down fats, and when this food mass, now called chyme, reaches the small intestine, it needs to be alkaline so it doesn’t burn us, and so that it’s in the right state for nutrients to be absorbed.

The large intestine is where water is recycled, any remaining vitamins and minerals can be absorbed, and any remains then eliminated.

So much can go wrong along the way and Functional nutritional therapy practitioners can help people with many health issues.

Hippocrates said more than 2500 years ago, that all disease starts in the gut. This is so on point today as for anyone suffering from autoimmune conditions, heart conditions, mental health issues, the need to lose or gain weight, or fertility issues, or those wishing to undertake detoxification, would be well advised to seek the help of a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, who would firstly assess their digestive function.

When digestive function is improved, symptoms are often reduced, and can even disappear.
